Essay (General)
Abstract:
This academic will discuss the neurobiological causes of epilepsy. The paper will also try to explain epilepsy in the simplest form and how individuals develop it. The paper will try to explain why the disorder occurs and what role do genes play. The paper will also discuss the symptoms and the gradual development of disorder and what triggers epileptic seizures and idiopathic epileptic seizures. The paper will also discuss other genetic epilepsy syndromes such as Generalized Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+).
From the paper:
The main reason why epilepsy develops is because of the chemical imbalances in the brain. These chemicals are called neurotransmitters which carry the message to and from the brain. Epilepsy occurs when these neurotransmitters speed up or slow down (Shorvon, 2005).Epilepsy also seems to hereditary. A special type of gene is responsible for breaking down proteins. People who develop epilepsy are often lacking this gene. Hereditary has a great influence on the development of this disorder. Studies have shown that relatives often develop the same kind of epilepsy. Seizures may also occur due a head injury. Another factor that contributes to the disorder is the environmental condition of the patient. Environmental causes may include exposure to certain chemicals, drug abuse, stress etc. Causes of seizures are only determined about 28 percent of time. All other seizures are believed to be idiopathic epilepsy seizures. Idiopathic seizures are the seizures the cause of which is unknown. Infarcts and hemorrhages may also be a cause of epilepsy. The seizure may also be psychogenic. Psychogenic seizures have a psychological cause rather than the biological one. 20-40 percent of seizures are said to be psychogenic.
