Abstract:
This academic paper explores all the decision made by one of the main characters, Bathsheba. A discussion of how all her decisions are influenced by her vanity. This paper will discuss how Bathsheba was responsible for her own fate. Further, the paper will discuss other main characters, especially Gabriel Oak, William Boldwood, and Francis Troy and discuss how these characters changed Bathsheba's life forever. The paper will also explore the dominant themes in the novel.

Bathsheba is a vain and flirtatious young woman. She is also very attractive and intelligent. Her vanity, however, makes her make decisions which change her life completely. When farmer Gabriel Oak proposes her, she refuses out of vanity. She then meets Francis Troy who plays an important role in her life because his disloyalty crushes Bathsheba and brings about a big change in her personality. Francis Troy is a charming man who uses his quality to take over Bathsheba's fortune. After being deceived by Francis Bathsheba loses hope and then comes in her life William Boldwood. Boldwood only notices Bathsheba when she forces him to. One little mistake changes the life Boldwood, who had been perfect until Bathsheba starts an anonymous love affair with him. This little mistake of Bathsheba brings many serious consequences for Boldwood who ends up in prison for life because of his mad love for Bathsheba. Only through a series of long and painful events does Bathsheba realize that the right person for her has always been Gabriel Oak. She could not see this because of his simplicity and her own vanity.
